Korn's third album Follow the Leader was released on August 18, 1998. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and sold 574,000 copies in its first week. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) awarded it triple platinum for shipping three million copies in the United States. The album Follow the Leader spawned three singles - "Freak on a Leash", "Got the Life" and "A.D.I.D.A.S." - which all reached the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. The album was praised by music critics. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "a groundbreaking album for nu metal" and Jon Pareles of The New York Times wrote that it "pushes the boundaries of what heavy metal can do". Several publications, including Rolling Stone, Spin and Alternative Press, ranked Follow the Leader among the best albums of the 1990s.
