Joy Division: The Best Of Joy Division version on CD in Standard edition. This particular edition was published in Canada in publishing company Rhino Records (2) in cooperation with London Records on 29. April 2008.
They were regarded as the hottest up-and-comers of the British post-punk scene, but shortly before their international breakthrough, the tragic suicide of singer Ian Curtis put an abrupt end to their big plans: the JOY DIVISION. Now Rhino are releasing the definitive Best Of... album that you've had to wait almost three decades for. Featuring all three studio albums and some tracks that were only available as singles or maxi-singles, The Best Of Joy Division tracklist should please more than just die-hard JOY DIVISON fans. Many younger music fans who have been exposed to the band around Ian Curtis through Anton Corbijn's successful film "Control" and current Joy Division influenced bands such as The Killers and Interpol will also be able to understand the extraordinary magic of JOY DIVISION in all its dark glory. The recordings from the John Peel sessions and the original interview with Ian Curtis and Stephen Morris, which you will find on CD2, add a special edge. Unknown Pleasures (1979) and Closer (1980) are two albums that were recorded during Curtis' lifetime and formed the basis of JOY DIVISION's cult status. The former showcased the band's oppressively mesmerizing atmosphere with Disorder, Shadowplay, New Dawn Fades and She's Lost Control, while the latter contained evidence of extraordinary artistic consistency with 24 Hours, Heart And Soul and Isolation. It wasn't until almost a year after Curtis' death that Still was released, containing, among others, Dead Souls and Transmission, which until then had only been available on EP and sampler. Atmosphere, Digital and Incubation, as well as the single Love Will Tear Us Apart with the B-side These Days were not available on regular albums at all. JOY DIVISION were twice invited to the highly acclaimed John Peel sessions, on 31 January and 26 November 1979. Also legendary are the two recordings for the TV show Something Else in September of that year, which are also on The Best Of Joy Division album. The story of JOY DIVISION does not end with the death of Ian Curtis. On the contrary, after the initial shock, the remaining band members recovered and dared to start again under the name New Order. As early as July 1980, Bernard Sumner, who had now taken over the vocal part, Peter Hook and Stephen Morris decided to continue. On the advice of manager Rob Gretton, Stephen's girlfriend Gillian joined the line-up as keyboardist. Although New Order still adhered to the dark melancholy of JOY DIVISION, they reoriented themselves stylistically and became the most important engine of the Madchester sound and eighties club culture. But while New Order now far outstrip JOY DIVISION in terms of commercial success, JD's influence on the music of the post-punk era cannot be overstated. The Best Of Joy Division on two discs shows why this is so.
Album spans genres Rock, Non-Music, New Wave, Alternative rock, Punk and Interview.
Joy Division was an English rock band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester. Originally named Warsaw, the band consisted of singer Ian Curtis, guitarist and keyboardist Bernard Sumner, bassist Peter Hook, and drummer Stephen Morris. Joy Division rapidly became one of the pi...
