Iron Maiden's third album The Number of the Beast was released in March 1982. The album was a critical and commercial success and went platinum in the United States in less than two months. The album's title track, "The Number of the Beast", was released as the album's lead single and reached number one on the UK singles chart. The album also spawned the band's only top ten single in the United States, "Run to the Hills". "The Number of the Beast" has been praised by music critics since its release. In a retrospective review, AllMusic called it "a groundbreaking album that broke the boundaries of heavy metal", while Metal Hammer called it "the greatest metal album of all time". The album ranked 24th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 best albums of the 1980s.
