Gary se narodil 4. dubna 1952 v Belfastu v Severním Irsku. Stejně jako mnoho jiných ho k rock'n'rollu nejprve inspiroval Elvis Presley a poté Beatles. Když v polovině šedesátých let viděl ve svém rodném městě Jimiho Hendrixe a Bluesbreakers Johna Mayalla, otevřel se mu bohatý svět blues. Umění bluesové kytary, na kterou hráli tak uznávaní představitelé jako Peter Green, podnítilo Mooreův rostoucí talent a zanedlouho byl prohlášen za hudební zázrak. Ve skutečnosti to byl sám Green, kdo se staral o Mooreovu kariéru, a tento dluh mu byl bohatě splacen albem "Blues For Greeny" z roku 1995, které je vřelou a upřímnou poctou jeho učiteli.
