The album was composed and produced by Sam Shepherd aka Floating Points, whose second album Crush was named Best New Music by Pitchfork, appeared in the New York Times and made several critics' lists for 2019. His debut album Elaenia, released on Luaka Bop, was also named Best New Music and named one of the best debuts of the decade. It's also the release that brought Pharoah Sanders to the collaboration. Shepherd is a restless, ever-evolving producer and songwriter who has toured with The xx and also has a PhD in neuroscience. It's a rare achievement for Pharoah Sanders, who recently celebrated his 80th birthday, and his first album in 15 years. Pharoah, one of the last icons of his generation, played with John Coltrane on his late free-jazz masterpieces and released a series of extensive recordings under his own name for the Impulse! label, which has been a major influence on everyone from The Stooges to Marvin Gaye. He most recently appeared in the 2020 Supreme campaign. The music patiently unfolds over nine movements and 46 ever-lengthening minutes. It's a work of pure feeling, the likes of which you won't hear this year or ever.
