The album was recorded at BearTracks Studios in New York City and mixed at The Plant Recording Studios in Sausalito, California. The album is conceptual and is divided into six parts, each representing a different stage of his life. The album was met with mixed reviews from music critics, but was commercially successful and debuted at number two on the Billboard 200.
