For many bands, it's difficult to put them in one box. But only some prefer to open their own right away. Like Dream Theater. It says "Progressive Metal" on it, which means their music blends elements of metal, prog rock and fusion like nowhere else. New Yorkers John Petrucci (guitar), John Myung (bass) and Mike Portnoy (drums) found each other back in the mid-80s at Berklee College Of Music. The breakthrough, however, came in 1992 when James LaBrie was finally chosen out of about 200 candidates for lead singer for Dream Theater's second album "Images And Words". The single "Pull Me Under" made the US Top Ten. In 1994, "Awake" made the German Top 20, which is astounding considering that this album was much more complex, harder and darker than its predecessor. But Dream Theater got even better five years later. "Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes From A Memory" is considered the band's magnum opus. Portnoy and Petrucci were inspired by, among other things, the film "Shadows of the Past" when creating the concept album about fratricide, hypnosis and rebirth, which features a gospel choir on the song "The Spirit Carries On." The band's seventh album "Train Of Thought" was created in 2003 from completely different sources after Dream Theater had supported the complete albums "Master Of Puppets" (Metallica) and "The Number Of The Beast" (Iron Maiden) on their previous tour. After that they managed to play pretty hard themselves - metal in, progressiveness out of the drawer.
