Simply titled Ma, Devendra Banhart's third album for Nonesuch explores - often fascinatingly - the unconditional nature of maternal love, the instinct to provide, the transmission of knowledge, the desire to build a mother-child bond and the consequences of breaking that bond. Banhart does not approach the underlying theme of motherhood literally; rather, he reflects, touches upon, and considers the concept of motherhood from a variety of perspectives, creating an album composed of diverse, intertwining narrative threads. His concerns are as personal as they are global, with subtle autobiographical reflections on life and death and meditations on the fragile state of our world. The many light moments in "Ma" are balanced by deeply melancholic, even sad ones. Three tracks are in Spanish, which is Banhart's native language as well as English, and one in Portuguese.
