Billy Cobham is one of the finest jazz fusion drummers of recent decades, gaining a high reputation as a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra and through his work with Miles Davis, as well as for his inimitable playing style and impressive live performances. Just shortly after leaving the Mahavishnu Orchestra, he released his legendary debut album Spectrum, which remains one of the most important and influential jazz albums of all time. Cobham, himself influenced by the music of the great Miles Davis, combines elements of jazz with rock and psychedelia, and presents his true identity to listeners in the form of this Spectrum, which ranges from softer sections to more aggressive moments. The included track Stratus is an absolute masterpiece of an album, blending funky grooves with effective guitar melodies in a very harmonious way, and Cobham's excellent drumming skills bring the true soul of jazz to life.
