Billie Holiday didn't write the song "Strange Fruit," but her voice made it the song we know today. Holiday first recorded it on this day in 1939, less than a month after she first performed it at New York's famous Café Society club. Since then, it has become a classic and a warning: a voice from history addressing the real and extremely cruel horrors of systemic racism. The song instantly became an anthem, and Holiday has carried it, as well as the burden that racism places on those who encounter it, throughout her career, playing it in many circumstances and moods as she struggled with fame, racism and heroin addiction.
