Bedřich Smetana: Libuše version on 2CD in Remastered edition. This particular edition was published in Czech Republic in publishing company Supraphon on 8. October 2009.
Product information: The opera Libuše has a unique position in Czech national culture. Smetana composed it as a festive opera to be performed on the occasions of celebrations of the Czech nation. The first such occasion was the opening of the National Theatre in Prague in 1881, when the work premiered. In the Supraphon catalogue you can already find a CD of Smetana's Libuše in two complete live recordings documenting the interpretive mastery of the artists associated with the National Theatre: the legendary recording of the 1983 performance on the occasion of the theatre's reopening after its reconstruction with Gabriela Beňačková in the lead role, and the 1995 recording of the new production of Libuše at the National, with Eva Urbanová in the lead role. Supraphon is now supplementing these recordings with an older studio recording from 1965, previously unreleased on CD, when Naděžda Kniplová played the lead role under the direction of Jaroslav Krombholc. The reissue of this recording is part of Supraphon's new series called Czech Opera Treasures, which aims to present recordings of complete operas that have not yet been released on CD.
