'Nightmare', the new album the band was working on when drummer Jimmy Sullivan died late last December, already seemed to be a very dark masterpiece, a concept album that embarks on a journey through madness, despair and death, a journey that actually began in 1999 when the band formed and released their indie metal debut 'Sounding the Seventh Trumpet' in 2001 (the members were only 18 years old at the time of recording!). In 2003 followed the spectacular "Waking The Fallen", the constantly surprising and transgressive "City Of Evil" (2005) and finally in 2007 their own album "Avenged Sevenfold". In addition, the CD/DVD "Live in the LBC & Rough Diamonds", released in 2008, gives a great picture of the band's live qualities. On "Nightmare", Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy played the challenging drum parts and Mike Elizondo (Dr. Dre, Eminem, Regina Spektor) took on the role of producer. Both Mikes - Elizondo and Portnoy - outgrew their roles. Elizondo was already on board as producer before Reva's death. It's an odd combination for the uninitiated, but not for the band: "He came to us wanting to make a record as a fan of the band and as a fellow musician," says Vengeance. "The repertoire consists of massive rap and a bit of country, pop and hip-hop ;" In summary, this album is a blend of the entire history of AVENGED SEVENFOLD You can hear the band's earliest influences and inspirations, as well as a wide range of individual tastes that have developed over the years.
