L. M. Sperger

L. M. Sperger

Classical Double Bass Virtuoso and Composer

Ludwig Matthias Sperger, often referred to as L. M. Sperger, was an Austrian composer and double bass player born on May 23, 1750, in Feldsberg, Moravia (now Valtice, Czech Republic). He is not widely known for producing albums as his career took place in the classical era, long before the advent of recorded music. Sperger was a prolific composer with a substantial body of work that includes symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and sonatas. His most notable contributions are to the double bass repertoire, including 18 concertos for the instrument which have gained him recognition among double bass players. He worked at various courts throughout his life and was esteemed for his virtuosity on the double bass. Sperger passed away on March 13, 1812, in Ludwigslust, Germany.
