The live recordings on this double LP are among the best Duke Ellington has made in the last ten years of his career - they give a vivid impression of the sound of his orchestra. The recordings form an Ellingtonian retrospective while showing the level and skill of a great band, with highlights definitely including "Rockin' in Rhythm" and "Take the 'A'-Train" (the latter with a lovely entrance by Cootie Williams on trumpet). There are also solos by Johnny Hodges on alto saxophone, a furious tenor sax solo on "In Triplicate," several guest appearances by Wild Bill Davis on organ, and a sixteen-and-a-half-minute medley of nine different songs; very hilarious.Most memorable is Cat Anderson's trumpet on "Satin Doll." This is probably his most amazing solo because he plays notes that are actually unplayable on the trumpet - and he plays the impossible perfectly.Anyone who collects jazz has a gem in their collection in this piece.
