The Modern Jazz Quartet

The Modern Jazz Quartet

Innovative Jazz Ensemble with Classical Influences

The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was a pioneering jazz group established in 1952, known for their sophisticated style that blended classical music elements with cool jazz and bebop. The quartet's original lineup consisted of John Lewis on piano and musical director, Milt Jackson on vibraphone, Percy Heath on bass, and Kenny Clarke on drums, with Connie Kay replacing Clarke in 1955. They were renowned for their refined, elegant sound and their ability to bridge the gap between jazz and European classical music traditions.
