The Human League

The Human League

British synth-pop pioneers

The Human League is an influential British synth-pop band formed in Sheffield, England, in 1977. Originally a quintet with an avant-garde electronic sound, the group underwent a significant lineup change in 1980. Founding members Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh left to form Heaven 17, and lead vocalist Philip Oakey recruited new members including female vocalists Joanne Catherall and Susan Ann Sulley. This shift marked a transition to a more accessible pop style, which was fully realized with their 1981 album "Dare." The album was a critical and commercial success, featuring hits like "Don't You Want Me," which became an international chart-topper.
