Shanachie

Shanachie Records was founded in 1972 by Richard Nevins and Daniel Michael Collins. According to Harvey Pekar (Secret Museum of Music), it is one of the largest independent record labels in the world, and is currently distributed by E1 Music. Starting as speciality fiddle music label they released work by Celtic groups such as Planxty, Clannad and The Chieftains. Other genres on the label include Latin American, African music, soul, country, reggae and ska. In 1989 they acquired Yazoo Records from Nick Perls. This allowed them to release vintage jazz and blues recordings. Label Code: LC 5762 / LC 05762 The label name is from the Irish word seanchaí, a storyteller. The early label design was made by Robert Crumb in 1975. The Grammy-award winning Soweto Gospel Choir releases albums on Shanachie Records.
