Gregorian Chant

Gregorian Chant

Gregorian chant is an unaccompanied Latin chant used in the ceremonies of the Roman Catholic Church, named after Pope Gregory the Great (c. 540-604). It is the oldest form that has survived unchanged to this day. The Gregorian melody is diatonic, the scale excluding the alteration of the 7th degree to reach the semitone between the 7th and 8th degrees. Halftones were considered imperfect, so composers rejected them. The style of the melody is monody, it needs no accompaniment.
