Ravi Shankar was a virtuoso sitar player and a composer who is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the world of Indian classical music. Born on April 7, 1920, in Varanasi, India, he was a key figure in the popularization of Indian music in the Western world and played a pivotal role in the development of fusion music. Shankar began his career as a dancer in the troupe of his brother Uday Shankar but later dedicated himself to the sitar. He studied under the tutelage of Allauddin Khan, and his mastery of the instrument led to an illustrious career that spanned over eight decades.
