Phil Ranelin

Jazz Trombonist and Composer

Phil Ranelin is a renowned jazz trombonist, composer, and educator known for his contributions to the world of jazz and his role in the development of the Los Angeles jazz scene. Born on May 25, 1939, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Ranelin moved to Detroit in the 1960s where he became an active member of the city's vibrant jazz community. In 1971, he co-founded the influential record label and collective Tribe with saxophonist Wendell Harrison. The label served as a platform for progressive jazz artists to produce and release their music during a time when mainstream record companies often overlooked them.
