Japanese Conductor and Harpsichordist

Masaaki Suzuki is a renowned Japanese conductor, organist, harpsichordist, and scholar particularly noted for his work in the field of historically informed performance of Baroque music. He is best known for his interpretations of the works of Johann Sebastian Bach. Born in Kobe, Japan, in 1954, Suzuki founded the Bach Collegium Japan (BCJ) in 1990, an ensemble that has gained international fame for its Bach recordings, including the complete church cantatas. Under Suzuki's meticulous direction, BCJ's recordings have been critically acclaimed for their clear articulation and expressive, yet historically informed performances.
