Trailblazing American Conductor and Music Director

Marin Alsop is a distinguished American conductor and violinist, renowned for her dynamic and innovative approach to classical music. Born on October 16, 1956, in New York City, she studied at the Juilliard School and later under the tutelage of Leonard Bernstein, who became her mentor. Alsop made history by becoming the first woman to serve as the music director of a major American orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, a position she held from 2007 to 2021. She has also served as principal conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and is currently the chief conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra.
