Lester Young

Lester Young

Influential American Jazz Tenor Saxophonist

Lester Young, nicknamed "Pres" or "Prez," was a highly influential American jazz tenor saxophonist and occasional clarinetist. Born on August 27, 1909, in Woodville, Mississippi, he grew up in a musical family and began his professional career playing in his family's band and with other territory bands. Young rose to prominence in the 1930s while playing with the Count Basie Orchestra, where his relaxed, smooth playing style and unique tone contrasted sharply with the more forceful approach of his contemporary Coleman Hawkins.
