John Playford

John Playford

17th-Century English Composer and Music Publisher

John Playford was an English publisher, bookseller, and minor composer known primarily for his significant contributions to the preservation of music in the 17th century. Born in Norwich in 1623, Playford moved to London where he set up his shop near the Temple Church at the sign of the Raven. He is best remembered for his publication of "The English Dancing Master" in 1651, which is a collection of English country dances. This work went through numerous editions and was instrumental in keeping these traditional dances alive through the centuries.
