Erwin Schulhoff

Erwin Schulhoff

Czech Avant-Garde Composer and Pianist

Erwin Schulhoff was a Czech composer and pianist, born on June 8, 1894, in Prague. A significant figure in early 20th-century music, Schulhoff was one of the first classical composers to embrace the new jazz idiom that emerged in the 1920s. He studied at the Prague Conservatory and later in Vienna, Leipzig, and Cologne, where he was influenced by the likes of Debussy, Scriabin, and Schoenberg. His early works were marked by a post-Romantic style, but he soon developed an interest in Dadaism and incorporated jazz elements into his compositions.
