William Boughton is a British conductor and musician known for his extensive work in the classical music field. He was born into a musical family and studied the cello at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London before turning to conducting. Boughton founded the English Symphony Orchestra (ESO) in 1978, where he served as its principal conductor for many years, helping to establish it as one of the UK's leading orchestras. Under his leadership, the ESO undertook numerous recordings, including works by English composers such as Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams, as well as a wide range of repertoire from Baroque to contemporary music. Boughton has also conducted other orchestras around the world and has been recognized for his contributions to music with various awards and honors. His discography includes a variety of albums that showcase his versatility and commitment to both well-known and lesser-known works.
