Renowned Chamber Music Ensemble

The Vermeer Quartet was a world-renowned string quartet that was founded in 1969 at the Marlboro Music Festival and later became associated with the Music Department at Northern Illinois University. The quartet was named after the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer and was known for its refined style, technical precision, and deep musical insight. The ensemble's members over the years included violinists Shmuel Ashkenasi and Mathias Tacke, violist Richard Young, and cellist Marc Johnson, among others.
