Tor Mann

Swedish conductor, born 25 February 1894 in Stockholm, died 29 March 1974 in Stockholm. He started as a cellist but later switched to the conducting profession. He was chief conductor of Göteborgs Symfoniker from 1925-39, then chief conductor of Sveriges Radios Symfoniorkester until 1959. He was a teacher at the current Royal Academy of Music 1939-1961 and became a professor in 1945. He became particularly interested in music by Jean Sibelius, Gösta Nystroem, Ture Rangström , Wilhelm Stenhammar and Carl Nielsen, but also the young Allan Pettersson. Another composer he devoted much space to in his repertoire was Franz Berwald. He organized Nordic Music Days in Gothenburg 1937-39 and in Stockholm 1941-42. After retiring in Stockholm, Tor Mann served for several years at the Folk Music School in Arvika as conductor and teacher of conducting. He also traveled as a conductor in all the Nordic capitals and around Europe.
