Born on March 16, 1930, in Detroit, Michigan, Flanagan became an integral part of the vibrant jazz scene that emerged from the Motor City. He was known for his elegant touch, harmonic sophistication, and lyrical improvisation style. Flanagan worked with a plethora of jazz greats throughout his career, including stints as a sideman for legendary artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, with whom he toured extensively as her pianist.
