The Verve

The Verve

British Alternative Rock Band

The Verve, an English rock band formed in 1990 in Wigan, is best known for their commercial breakthrough with the album "Urban Hymns" and the hit single "Bitter Sweet Symphony." The band's lineup consisted of lead vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones, and drummer Peter Salisbury. They initially gained attention with their debut album "A Storm in Heaven" in 1993, which showcased their psychedelic sound. However, it was their third album, "Urban Hymns," released in 1997, that catapulted them to international fame. This critically acclaimed album included successful singles such as "The Drugs Don't Work" and "Lucky Man," alongside "Bitter Sweet Symphony," which became synonymous with the band's legacy despite a legal controversy over its use of a Rolling Stones sample. The Verve disbanded in 1999 but reunited in 2007 to release a fourth studio album, "Forth," before disbanding again in 2009. They also released a compilation album titled "This Is Music: The Singles 92-98," which featured a selection of their singles from that period. The Verve's influence on British rock music remains significant, with their blend of atmospheric guitar work and emotive lyrics.
