The New Power Generation

The New Power Generation

Princes Former Backing Band

The New Power Generation, often abbreviated as The NPG, was an American band formed by the iconic musician Prince in 1990. The group served as Prince's backing band and was known for its diverse musical styles, which included funk, R&B, rock, and jazz elements. They made their debut on Prince's 1991 album "Diamonds and Pearls," which showcased a more contemporary sound that resonated with audiences, producing hits like "Cream" and the title track "Diamonds and Pearls." The New Power Generation continued to work closely with Prince throughout the 1990s and into the early 2000s, contributing to his dynamic live performances and recordings. They were known for their musical versatility and ability to seamlessly blend with Prince's evolving artistic vision. The band played a significant role in live albums such as "One Nite Alone... Live!" and "One Nite Alone... The Aftershow: It Ain't Over! (Up Late With Prince & The NPG)," both released in 2002, which captured the energy of Prince's live shows during that era. The New Power Generation continued to perform and tour after Prince's untimely death in 2016, celebrating his legacy and their collective contributions to his storied career.
