The Make-Up

The Make-Up

Post-punk revival band

The Make-Up was an American post-punk band formed in Washington, D.C., in 1995. The group consisted of Ian Svenonius on vocals, James Canty on guitar and organ, Steve Gamboa on drums, and Michelle Mae on bass guitar. They were known for their energetic live performances and a style that blended garage rock, gospel, and soul influences, which they termed "Gospel Yeh-Yeh." The band emerged from the ashes of the influential punk outfit Nation of Ulysses and was part of the wider DIY punk scene associated with the Dischord Records label.
