Tarquinio Merula

Tarquinio Merula

17th-Century Italian Composer and Organist

Tarquinio Merula (1594/95 – 1665) was an Italian composer, organist, and violinist of the early Baroque era. He is considered one of the most innovative and prominent composers of the early 17th century, particularly in the development of forms like the canzona and the sonata. Merula worked in various cities across Italy, including Cremona, Bergamo, and Venice, where he held positions as maestro di cappella. His compositions include a variety of vocal and instrumental works, such as madrigals, arias, motets, and instrumental pieces. Merula's music often showcases a dramatic and expressive style that was influential on later composers. While he was a prolific composer during his lifetime, specific albums titled "Timeless," "Alla Luna (Per Sonar & Cantar)," and "Gloria A Venezia!" do not directly pertain to his original body of work but could potentially be modern compilations or interpretations of his compositions.
