Tan Dun gained international fame when he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score in 2001 for "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon," a film directed by Ang Lee. His work often incorporates organic elements such as water, paper, and stone as instruments, creating unique soundscapes.
