Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor

British Classical Composer and Conductor

Samuel Coleridge-Taylor (1875–1912) was a prominent English composer and conductor of mixed-race heritage, often referred to as the "African Mahler." His father hailed from Sierra Leone, and his mother was English. Coleridge-Taylor achieved considerable fame in the early 20th century, both in the United Kingdom and abroad. He is best known for his choral work "Hiawatha's Wedding Feast," which was part of a trilogy called "The Song of Hiawatha" based on Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's epic poem. This piece became exceptionally popular in England during his lifetime.
