Rudolf Baumgartner

Swiss Conductor and Violinist

Rudolf Baumgartner was a Swiss violinist and conductor, renowned for his contributions to classical music, particularly in the 20th century. Born on August 14, 1917, in Zürich, he went on to study violin with the esteemed pedagogue Carl Flesch and later with Stefi Geyer. Baumgartner co-founded the Lucerne Festival Strings (Festival Strings Lucerne) in 1956 with Wolfgang Schneiderhan, which became one of the most respected chamber orchestras in the world. Under his leadership, the ensemble gained international acclaim for their performances and recordings of Baroque and classical repertoire.
