Red Garland

Red Garland

Jazz Pianist and Member of the Miles Davis Quintet

Red Garland was an influential American jazz pianist known for his work during the 1950s and 1960s. Born William McKinley Garland, Jr. on May 13, 1923, in Dallas, Texas, he developed a distinctive style that combined elements of swing and bop, characterized by his use of block chords and a lush, orchestral approach to the piano. Garland's career took off after he joined the Miles Davis Quintet in 1955, where he played alongside John Coltrane, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. This period was marked by a series of classic recordings for the Prestige label, including "Workin'," "Relaxin'," and "Steamin' with the Miles Davis Quintet."
