Roebuck "Pops" Staples was an American gospel and R&B musician, best known as the patriarch of the Staples Singers, a family group that played a significant role in the civil rights movement with their music. Born on December 28, 1914, in Winona, Mississippi, Pops Staples began his career by singing in local churches and later moved to Chicago, where he formed the Staples Singers with his children in 1951.
