Nicola Matteis

Nicola Matteis

Baroque Violinist and Composer

Nicola Matteis was an Italian Baroque composer and violinist who flourished in the latter part of the 17th century. He is best known for his influence on the English music scene after he moved to England around the 1670s. Matteis introduced a new style of violin playing and composition to England, which was distinct from the native traditions. His works, particularly "Ayres for the Violin," showcase his virtuosic technique and were highly regarded for their expressive qualities and technical demands. These pieces were published in four books from 1676 to 1685 and include a variety of dances, preludes, and other compositions that exhibit his innovative approach to melody and ornamentation. Matteis' contributions to the development of violin technique and his blending of Italian and English musical styles were significant, and his music continued to be influential even after his death.
