Mily Balakirev

Mily Balakirev

Russian Romantic Composer and Pianist

Mily Balakirev was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor who played a pivotal role in the development of Russian classical music in the 19th century. Born on January 2, 1837, in Nizhny Novgorod, Balakirev showed musical talent from an early age. He is often regarded as the leader of the group of composers known as "The Five" or "The Mighty Handful," which included other notable Russian composers such as Modest Mussorgsky, Alexander Borodin, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, and Cesar Cui. This group aimed to create a distinct Russian style of classical music.
