Lonnie Smith

Lonnie Smith

Jazz Organist and Funk Pioneer

Dr. Lonnie Smith was an acclaimed American jazz organist who was born on July 3, 1942, in Lackawanna, New York. Not to be confused with the younger jazz musician Lonnie Liston Smith, Dr. Lonnie Smith was known for his work on the Hammond B-3 organ, and his music often blended elements of soul jazz, funk, and blues. He first gained prominence in the late 1960s as a member of George Benson's quartet and quickly became known for his distinctive turban and his funky, groove-oriented approach to the organ.
