Les McCann is an influential American jazz pianist and vocalist whose career spans several decades, beginning in the early 1960s. He is known for his soulful playing style and for being a pioneer in the soul jazz movement, which blends jazz with elements of R&B and gospel. McCann gained significant attention with his performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival, which was captured on the album "Swiss Movement" recorded live in 1969 with saxophonist Eddie Harris and trumpeter Benny Bailey. This album included the hit single "Compared to What," and it became one of the best-selling jazz records of its time. Throughout his career, Les McCann has released a multitude of albums showcasing his versatility as both a pianist and a singer. His work has influenced many musicians and continues to be celebrated for its emotive power and groove.
