Kenny Dorham was an influential American jazz trumpeter, composer, and bandleader who made significant contributions to the bebop and hard bop genres. Born McKinley Howard Dorham on August 30, 1924, in Fairfield, Texas, he began his career in the late 1940s playing with the big bands of Dizzy Gillespie, Lionel Hampton, and Billy Eckstine. Dorham was known for his warm, round tone and sophisticated harmonic sense.
