José Afonso

José Afonso

Portuguese folk and political singer-songwriter

José Afonso, often referred to as Zeca Afonso, was a highly influential Portuguese folk and political musician whose work played a significant role in the protest movement against the Estado Novo regime. Born on February 2, 1929, in Aveiro, Portugal, he became an iconic figure in Portuguese culture, particularly due to his involvement with the Carnation Revolution which led to the fall of the dictatorship in 1974. His song "Grândola, Vila Morena" became an emblematic anthem of the revolution when it was broadcast as a signal to start the military coup.
