John Duffey

Influential Bluegrass Musician and Singer

John Duffey was a prominent American bluegrass musician known for his distinctive high tenor voice and innovative mandolin playing. Born on March 4, 1934, in Washington, D.C., Duffey made significant contributions to the genre as a member of two influential bluegrass bands: The Country Gentlemen and The Seldom Scene. With The Country Gentlemen, which he co-founded in 1957, Duffey helped modernize bluegrass by incorporating folk and contemporary elements into their music. This band was instrumental in expanding the appeal of bluegrass beyond its traditional Southern roots.
