Johannes Matthias Sperger

Austrian Classical Composer and Double Bass Virtuoso

Johannes Matthias Sperger, born on March 23, 1750, in Feldsberg, Lower Austria (now Valtice, Czech Republic), was an Austrian composer and double bass player. He is not widely known today but was quite prolific during his lifetime. Sperger composed over 40 symphonies, numerous concertos (including at least 18 for the double bass), sonatas, and chamber music. His style is reflective of the classical period, with influences from contemporaries such as Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
