Jean de Sainte-Colombe

Jean de Sainte-Colombe

17th-Century French Viola da Gamba Composer and Virtuoso

Jean de Sainte-Colombe (circa 1640–1700) was a French composer and violist whose life and career remain somewhat shrouded in mystery. He is known for his contributions to the repertoire of the viola da gamba, an instrument popular during the Baroque period. Sainte-Colombe is credited with adding a seventh string to the bass viol, which expanded its range and expressive capabilities. Although there are few records of his life, he is acknowledged for his influence on the French school of viol playing and for being a teacher to the famous violist Marin Marais, who would go on to become one of the most renowned composers for the instrument. Sainte-Colombe's compositions include "Concerts à deux violes esgales," which are duets for two equal viols that showcase intricate counterpoint and a deep understanding of the instrument's capabilities. His music was brought to wider public attention in the late 20th century, partly due to the film "Tous les matins du monde" (1991), which fictionalizes aspects of his life and relationship with Marais.
