Hamburger Ratsmusik is an ensemble that specializes in the performance of early music, particularly from the 17th and 18th centuries. The group was founded in 1991 by gambist Simone Eckert and is based in Hamburg, Germany. The name "Ratsmusik" refers to the historical tradition of city councils (Rat in German) employing musicians for civic functions, a practice common in many European cities during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Hamburger Ratsmusik has gained a reputation for its historically informed performances using period instruments. The ensemble's repertoire includes a wide range of chamber music, from lesser-known works to compositions by prominent composers of the era.
