Gianluigi Gelmetti

Italian Conductor and Composer

Gianluigi Gelmetti was an Italian conductor and composer renowned for his interpretations of both symphonic and operatic repertoire. Born on September 11, 1945, in Rome, Italy, he studied conducting with Franco Ferrara, Sergiu Celibidache, and Hans Swarowsky. Throughout his illustrious career, Gelmetti held prestigious positions such as the Chief Conductor of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. He also served as the Music Director of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. Gelmetti was known for his expertise in Italian opera, particularly the works of Gioachino Rossini, which is reflected in his involvement with albums such as "Eduardo E Cristina" and "Zelmira." His contributions to classical music extended beyond conducting to teaching, where he shared his knowledge with younger generations of musicians. Gelmetti's influence on the world of classical music remained significant until his passing on August 11, 2021.
