Friedrich Silcher

Friedrich Silcher

German Composer and Choir Director

Friedrich Silcher (1789–1860) was a German composer known for his contributions to the choral repertoire and his influence on the musical culture of his time. Although not as widely recognized as some of his contemporaries, Silcher played a significant role in shaping the German Lied and choral traditions. He served as a music director at the University of Tübingen, where he worked for many years. Silcher composed various works, including songs, choral pieces, and chamber music. His setting of the poem "Loreley" by Heinrich Heine is one of his most famous works and has become a staple in German choral singing. His influence extends beyond his compositions; he was also known for his arrangements of folk songs that contributed to the preservation and popularity of German folk music traditions.
